2011: A YEAR OF INDEPENDENCE AND INITIATION
BY NADIYA SHAH, M.A.
Uranus enters the sign of Aries in March, staying for most of the decade. Aries is the sign of spring, and like spring, we should notice new beginnings individually and collectively. If there were ever a time March came in like a lion, or more accurately like a ram, this would be it. We will notice a peak in this decade long trend through the spring and early summer of 2011.
In “Free-Agent Nation,” Daniel Pink predicted self-employment as the wave of the future. This will begin to be evident more in 2011. Large numbers of people will go the entrepreneurial route. This will partly be motivated by the desire to change their financial circumstances brought on by the economy, and partly by being inspired to do work they really want. Promotional videos on video sharing sites such as Youtube will go through a boom, as more people seek to use the latest technology to market themselves, whatever their dreams may be.
We will also see advances in military technology as remote viewers become standard tools. Skills akin to video gamers will increasingly replace front line soldiers. Some may question the value of traditions such as “boot camp” for this new generation of militia. More military operations around the world will be voluntary, or at least, allow people within them certain freedoms not granted to the general population of that country. Forceful displays certainly get attention. Power tempered with wisdom garners respect. This is the lesson we will be asked to integrate personally and collectively.
Groups seeking to abolish “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” will have their best opportunities to see this law overturned as 2010 draws to a close and in the first half of the year. Once Saturn, keeper of tradition, leaves the sign of marriage Libra in 2012, we will notice a wider assertion of marriage rights for LGBT communities around the world.
Aries is also the sign of the athlete. For better or worse, more professional athletes will be revealed to have created notable careers with the aid of steroids. As professional sports has established itself as big business, new technologies, from cutting edge drugs that fall just out of reach of the “steroid” definition will begin to be utilized. We should also see the introduction of revolutionary training techniques and novel exercise equipment. A new spirituality will be brought to sports and exercise.
The Tea Party and The Counter Culture
Since 2008, I have predicted a new counter culture, based not on the “free love” of the 60s, but rather on the individual. One of the forms this has taken is in the Tea Party political party of the United States. While they have captured the media’s imagination, the brand you see now will remain a small minority. They were triggered by the new health care laws. However, Neptune is the ruler of medicine. In its home sign of Pisces, which rules Health Care, we should see a greater acceptance of the policies enacted in the United States. People will begin to enjoy the advantages. We begin to see the influence of the Tea Party in 2011 on the collective mind, as more people ask for freedom from bureaucracy in all things, especially those outside the official Tea Party mandates. With the rise of the individual over government, this exact dialogue will be used to further equal marriage assertions and even pro-marijuana activists.
The Economy
As more people move to take their economic future in their own hands, we will remain aware of the power of big corporations. Since 2008, when Pluto moved into the sign of Capricorn for an extended stay into 2024, we have noticed the power that corporate decisions have on our overall economic survival, no matter how far removed we are from its world. This trend continues in 2011. It is a time when the full extent of corporate prevalence will reveal itself. However, it is unlikely that we will see a shift in practices or power until 2013.
Buildup to 2012
Neptune has been in the sign of Aquarius since 1998. During that time, we saw movie technology become much more accessible, and video sharing became the standard in which many of us get our entertainment. It is said the Internet is the great equalizer. Neptune in Aquarius took it a step further, and allowed anyone to have equal airtime online. This period also brought about many people who escaped into technology, creating virtual realities to live in.
Neptune will enter Pisces for a brief mid-year taste of his presence in that sign. Next year he begins a longer stay in Pisces until 2026. This year, we get a brief glimpse how the Mayan prediction of a new phase of humanity will unfold. The sky suggests we enter a new phase, similar to the beginning of the renaissance. An interest in esoteric and alternative arts will flourish, along with all forms of art, music, and poetry. However, a more dramatic redefinition has been predicted. One popular hypothesis states we will be visited by aliens, causing us to move beyond defining ourselves by nationality, which will lead to a new unity among all of us on Earth. Whatever occurs will be part of the new spiritual paradigm we will usher in more fully at the end of next year.
It will be a great year, enjoy!
